Capturing The First Year

capturing the first year {nine months}

Phew! I’m not gonna lie, the past month has been k-razy! Somewhere along the road we thought it would be a good idea to move house ;-)

Thinking ahead, I made sure I didn’t pack my camera, but I DID pack my imac and didn’t have a work station for a short while as well as I cannot stand to work in chaos! Tidy house = tidy mind.  I’m continuing to desperately catch up with life after being somewhat off the grid for a while.

As much as I would like to have the nursery perfectly set up and decorated to shoot in, this is not going to happen any time soon so a little improvisation is needed. Packing boxes are our life right now and an experience in Mattheus’ first year to remember. Continue reading “capturing the first year {nine months}”

Capturing The First Year {eight months}

A few months in to Capturing The First Year, quite honestly I remember questioning what I’d gotten myself committed to! I worried that I wouldn’t find the time to complete the challenge or that I would start to lack the inspiration and even motivation to continue these monthly check-ins! Raise your hand if you find you start things but rarely finish them! And I am not taking about a glass of wine here :-)

Surprisingly two things have happened…. Continue reading “Capturing The First Year {eight months}”

Family Trip To The Red River

photographing boys-1

Gotta love boys. We have three of them. Three.

As in The Three Amigos, The Three Musketeers, The Three Wise Men, The Three Little Pigs, The Three Stooges. Good things come in three! Let me break it down even further for you; that’s one more than the number of hands I have. Two (hundred) more than the number of coffees I should have,  0.6 more than the (previous) average number of children in a family, three more boys than I thought I’d have (I pictured myself as a mother of girls) and a gazillion number of lost hours of sleep :-)

I wouldn’t change any of it for the world!

A few times a year, we take ourselves off to a little cabin on the Red River in Heber Springs, AR.  In the summer months a heavy mist hovers over the river in the early hours of the morning. This particular trip however, was mid March when Spring had already made an appearance, yet the air and water were still crisp and clear.

I wanted to document this trip; to tell the story, capturing their excitement, curiosity, joy and adventurous spirits. This included the occasional mishap, too: an impalement from tree climbing and disappointment due to the unexpected arrival of snow which held us captive in the cabin! All part of the moments I will treasure.

Capturing The First Year {seven months}

photographing-seven-month-old.png

As a mother, it’s important for me to be able to capture emotive detail and moments on camera. As an artist, it’s essential I integrate the creative use of light, composition and the surrounding environment. But, until recently, I’m not sure I have ever been as aware of these two elements being as deeply intertwined as I am today. One devoid of the other would only bring half of the beauty.  Continue reading “Capturing The First Year {seven months}”

Did you invest in a high end camera only to find that you’re stuck on automode; confused by the harsh flash light that pops up, yellow or green tinted images or blurry movement?

This post has been put together with the parent in mind, looking to take better pictures of their baby. With a focus on photographing your baby during their playtime, I’ll guide you through some tips on how to use your dslr and the standard kit lens (I promise my beloved prime lens will stay in the bag!)  Continue reading “Shooting In Manual {Baby’s Playtime}”

Capturing The First Year {five months}

photographing-five-month-old

Nearing six months you’ll definitely not want to miss all that your infant is able to do right now. Showing off his new found skills and doing them repeatedly as you shoot away! Admittedly I have a million and one images taken on my phone over these five months of my three boys but once a month I plan a mini styled session with the baby to really home in on the changes and hope to capture him in his everyday environment with shots that are also wall-display worthy! Capturing The First Year {Four Months}

Chances are you’re in a pretty steady routine with your four month old and apart from perhaps a sneaky sleep regression, you’re feeling a little more human again as the parent! However, as we ease into our routine, I’ve realized it becomes more of a challenge to notice the subtle developments that take place from month to month and sometimes from day to day. Setting time aside to intentionally photograph these moments has become a way I can savor these changes and I look forward to looking over the first year of our little one’s life. Capturing The first Year {Three Months}

three-month-baby-portraits-header

Oh three months, where have you gone?!

What seems like over-night, my tiny nugget has doubled his weight and somehow it happened right in front of my eyes! Perhaps a little sad to say goodbye to any resemblance of a newborn, this is a stage that in fact I have been looking forward to after having enjoyed watching our older sons grow. By three months, so much of their personality shines through. Quirky smiles, gurgles and hands-in-mouth mark this milestone! Continue reading “Capturing The first Year {Three Months}”
